Auction 1237 - Four Centuries of Reverse Glass Painting: The Collection of Gisela and Professor Wolfgang Steiner
On 16th November, Lempertz will auction star works from the Steiner Collection with an accompanying special catalogue. With this collection of European reverse glass painting, compiled over decades and with outstanding expertise, the collector couple Gisela and Professor Wolfgang Steiner document four centuries of this type of artwork from the Renaissance to the 19th century.

The reverse glass painting is the largest known example: It follows in reverse the engraving by Jean Audran (1667-1756) after the painting by Antoine Coypel (1661-1722), which hangs today in the Prado in Madrid. Johann Peter Abesch was one of the most important reverse glass painters of the 17th and early 18th century.
A larger group from this collection was acquired by The City of Augsburg, with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Foundation, the Cultural Foundation of the German Federal States and the Minister of State for Culture and Media, Claudia Roth, with a particular focus in on objects with a connection to Augsburg. Works of national importance will be auctioned at Lempertz in Cologne on 16th November.

Works by Cotto Ferrer still held the status of a very special art object in the 18th century: In 1724, two paintings of saints from the estate of Antonio Lopez Martinez were valued at 1500 reales, just as much as Madonna with Child and Saints by Peter Paul Rubens.
Nearly 20 years ago, Wolfgang Steiner published Hinterglas und Kupferstich. Hinterglasgemälde und ihre Vorlagen 1550 – 1850, his first academic publication on this hitherto little-studied field. Since then, he has written seven specialist books. Each publication was closely supervised by Wolfgang Steiner, as was the catalogue of this auction.

Signed ‘Philbert. Des. crajpiers. Paris. 1661’ below in gold and dated ‘1661’ a second time upper centre. The important museum painting is the only known signed and dated example of French reverse glass painting from the 17th century.
This special catalogue comprises 95 select lots, the estimates of which have been set deliberately low at the express wish of the collector couple.
