Auction House Brussels

In May 2014, following more than two-years of renovation, Lempertz moved into its new historic house in the Rue du Grand Cerf. Having run an office in the city since 1985, its presence was thus significantly strengthened in Brussels, one of Europe’s emerging art markets.
The Brussels auction house is ideally situated between the Sablon and Louise, in a historic building by the Belgian Art Nouveau architect Jules Barbier (1865 – 1910). Built in around 1900, the house features an almost 200 square meter auction hall. With a height of nine meters, it is the only large hall of its time to have been preserved in its original form in Brussels. The magnificent hall is used not only as an auction hall but has also become a popular exhibition venue in the Belgian capital and has shown artists such as Marie-Jo Lafontaine, Joannis Avramidis, Ellsworth Kelly, Sean Scully, Anish Kapoor and Jorinde Voigt, among others. The exhibitions “Pierre Dartevelle – 50 Years of Collection” and “Ancestral Visions: Papua New Guinea Art from the Sepik Ramu” were also very well attended.

Exhibition of selected Highlights of the Spring Auctions:
23 to 25 April from 11 am to 5 pm in Cologne 

Lempertz looks back on a long tradition in the sale of African and Oceanic art, with the annual Tribal Art auction held in Brussels featuring art and artefacts from Africa and the Pacific: from ritual masks and ceremonial figures to weapons, costumes and bodily ornaments, as well as everyday objects such as bowls and spoons. At the beginning of the 20th century, the artworks of Africa and Oceania fascinated artists and collectors alike and influenced modern art in Cubism, Fauvism or German Expressionism.
